I am humbled and elated to share that “…and the Earth Did Not Swallow Him” has been nominated for the Library of Congress National Film Registry by Congressman Joaquin Castro, Texas 20th district. It is both a personal honor and a celebration of the stories we, as a community, hold dear.

When I set out to adapt the seminal work of the Chicano writer, Tomás Rivera, my goal was to offer a voice to the untold stories of our community. Through the lens of the camera, I aspired to encapsulate the trials, joys, and the indomitable spirit of the Chicano people. To see this work now receiving such recognition is a testament to the enduring power of these stories and the resilience they represent.

The importance of preserving and honoring films that depict our collective histories cannot be overstated. Movies like “…and the Earth Did Not Swallow Him” are more than just entertainment; they serve as bridges between generations, connecting us with our roots and reminding us of the strength that resides within us.

To be nominated to the National Film Registry is not just a personal milestone but a beacon for all filmmakers who aspire to tell stories that matter, stories that echo in the hearts and minds of audiences for generations to come. This nomination emphasizes the vitality of diverse narratives and their pivotal role in shaping the narrative of American cinema.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for embracing this journey with me.

With deepest gratitude, Severo Pérez
